The project “We Keep Walking Together: Spaces for the Education and Protection of Street Children in Kenya” responds to the pressing need to expand and rehabilitate the facilities of the Temporary Rescue Center operated by AfCiC (Action for Children in Conflict). AfCIC is a Kenyan NGO that implements child protection and development programs aimed at preventing, supporting and rehabilitating street and vulnerable children and their families.
At the Temporary Rescue Center, children participate in a rehabilitation program lasting from six months to a year: AfCiC provides each child with food, shelter, clothing, and both formal and non-formal education in a protective environment.
The TRC can currently accommodate up to 25 children. Despite the eorts of AfCiC to address the complexities of rising childhood poverty in Thika, the demand for the programs and services provided by the Temporary Rescue Center continues to grow.
The ASFItalia project aims to improve the living conditions of the children housed within the community through the construction of new buildings and the provision of adequate space and sanitation facilities, enabling the expansion of the structure with an increase in the capacity of up to 75 children and the accommodation of 10 women in-need.
Rooted in an ethic of co-creation and collaboration, the project approach will achieve the following objectives:
• Increase the facility's accommodation capacity
• Identify and design spaces that promote the physical and psychological well-being of the children at the center, involving them and the staff in all stages of the design process, so that they become actors in the transformation of the space in which they live
• Identify and design spaces that foster social interaction opportunities for the children, encouraging the integration of the center with the external community
• Identify and design furniture and spatial layouts that respond to the physical and psychological needs of the children, with particular attention to privacy and the safeguarding of personal belongings.
In order to improve the financial sustainability of TRC, AfCiC has decided to develop the Centre launching income-generating activities, alongside its rescue and rehabilitation mission: specifically, a Learning Centre will be built with the capacity to host 200 students, enabling AfCiC to generate income to support the TRC and to continue accompanying children who need to extend their support pathway for a longer period..
Il progetto "We Keep Walking Together: Spaces for the Education and Protection of Street Children in Kenya" nasce per rispondere alla crescente necessità di ampliare e riqualificare le strutture del Temporary Rescue Center (TRC) gestito da AfCiC (Action for Children in Conflict). AfCiC è un'organizzazione non governativa keniana che realizza programmi di protezione e sviluppo dell'infanzia finalizzati alla prevenzione, al sostegno e al reinserimento dei bambini e dei ragazzi che vivono in strada e di altri minori vulnerabili, insieme alle loro famiglie.
Presso il Temporary Rescue Center, i bambini partecipano a un percorso di riabilitazione della durata compresa tra sei mesi e un anno. AfCiC garantisce loro vitto, alloggio, abbigliamento e un percorso educativo, sia formale sia non formale, all'interno di un ambiente protetto.
Attualmente il TRC può accogliere fino a 25 bambini. Nonostante l'impegno di AfCiC nel rispondere alle crescenti problematiche legate alla povertà infantile nell'area di Thika, la domanda dei servizi offerti dal centro continua ad aumentare.
Il progetto di ASF Italia mira a migliorare le condizioni di vita dei bambini ospitati nella struttura attraverso la costruzione di nuovi edifici e la realizzazione di spazi e servizi igienico-sanitari adeguati. L'intervento consentirà di ampliare la capacità ricettiva del centro fino a 75 bambini, oltre a prevedere l'accoglienza di 10 donne in condizioni di vulnerabilità.
Fondato su un approccio di co-progettazione e collaborazione, il progetto si propone di:
aumentare la capacità di accoglienza della struttura;
individuare e progettare spazi che favoriscano il benessere fisico e psicologico dei bambini, coinvolgendo i minori e lo staff in tutte le fasi del processo progettuale affinché diventino protagonisti della trasformazione degli spazi in cui vivono;
progettare ambienti che promuovano occasioni di socializzazione e favoriscano l'integrazione del centro con la comunità locale;
sviluppare arredi e configurazioni spaziali capaci di rispondere ai bisogni fisici e psicologici dei bambini, con particolare attenzione alla tutela della privacy e alla possibilità di custodire in sicurezza i propri effetti personali.
Per rafforzare la sostenibilità economica del Temporary Rescue Center, AfCiC ha inoltre deciso di affiancare alle attività di accoglienza e riabilitazione alcune attività generatrici di reddito. In particolare, sarà realizzato un Learning Centre con una capacità di circa 200 studenti, che consentirà all'organizzazione di generare risorse economiche a sostegno del TRC e di continuare ad accompagnare i bambini e i ragazzi che necessitano di un percorso di supporto più lungo.
